V for Vendetta

I didn't really know what to expect from this movie, just heard from others that it's about politics. Well, later I found out that it was much more than that - it's a good movie about revenge, the fight for freedom also.

One remarkable thing about this movie is that it has a lot of dialog compared to the other movies adapted from comics, and not just cliches - except for the authorities. And the movie had depth - it actually fleshes out v's character. We have never seen a comic hero who enjoys literature, classical music, arts, that can cook a nice egg toast, that can wear a ridiculous mask yet impress others, that can make others laugh yet create a sense of sympathy among others, have we?

His first appearance was already brilliant, with a quote from Shakespeare's Macbeth: "The multiplying villainies of nature do swarm upon him disdaining fortune/with his brandished steel, which smoked with bloody execution..." then a long-winded but amusing introduction with a lot of v-lettered words. FYI, I studied Macbeth last sem, so I was like, "Wow!"

There's a lot to be admired about V, his fireworks explosion, his extra-fast reflection, his wits, his guts, his flamboyance, his fascination with The Count of Monte Cristo, etc. FYI again, The Count of Monte Cristo was one of my favourite novels. So I was like "Wa Lau! Syok-nye"

Basically this story is about a person whose code-name was V when he was in a facility where the government tests bio-weapons on people. Somehow he broke free and for 20 years or so, he somehow accumulated a great fortune (and lots of works of art) and read tonnes of book and learned lots of skills, and emerged as the guy with the Guy Fawkes mask.

He talked about freeing the people from the government's autocracy, to restore justice and democracy to the country, etc etc when deep inside his heart he only wanted to have revenge for what they have done to him and a lesbo who stayed in the cell beside him that time. Nevertheless, by executing his revenge, he succeeded to stir up awareness for freedom and eventually a revolution among the people. With the power of unity and the power of some explosives and blades (heh heh), he finally created a better future for England (America was already doomed by then according to the movie, cheers!).

Even till the end, we still don't know the identity of V. Yet we know this: "He is Edmond Dantes, he is my father and mother, he is my brother and friend, he is you and me, he is everyone of us". And even though the flesh dies, the ideas remain, and the ideas are bulletproof.

What can I say? Watch it or regret not watching it!
