Meaningless Chatter
One day, I was feeling bored, so i sms-ed my English lecturer, Mr. Sarno. After discussing about some course-related topics, I asked him about something more personal...
Wei Kee: Sir, as a smoker, do you enjoy 2nd hand smoke? How much do you spend a month in cigarettes? Do you suffer fits if you don't smoke for a week?
Sarno: As I inhale 1st hand smoke, that of a 2nd hand nature bothers me not a whit. With regard to how much it costs on a monthly basis, it is enough to say that after 30 some years of indulging, I've invested a house or 2. Finally, that nicotine is 1 of the most addictive substances on earth is a well known fact, so any major interruption in the feeding of the addiction has unpleasant consequences. And, equally important, smoking makes you cool ( heh heh)
Sarno: cough cough
WK: I accuse you (smokers) of causing lung cancers, I accuse you of causing air pollution, and I accuse you of causing M'sia hot like hell - anything that burns and emits smoke releases heat, so smoking is far from making us 'cool' (Emphasis on explanatory materials*)(Allusion)
Sarno: And we don't care
WK: And we (non-smokers) are not amused* (allusion)
Sarno: Non smokers should devote their (currently misguided) efforts to more important concerns - say world hunger, or passing eng 4u*.
WK: Smokers should convert to non-smokers so that non-smokers (now in greater number) can divert their (currently misunderstood by smokers) efforts to the 'more important concerns' stated - besides reducing deaths caused by smoking and air pollution.
Sarno: Look both ways before you cross the street - that's more of a threat than smoking. And if we're talking pollution, i guess we have to ban indonesia and a few other miscreants, like the whole oil-based world economy.
WK: Since this debate is getting nowhere, I have to resort to this: There's a Chinese axiom that truth always prevails over even the most cunning rhetorics. The scientifically proven and worldwidely recognized fact that smoking is harmful utterly defeats your brilliant, yet misguided and misguiding arguments
Sarno: Ah, the scoundrels last refuge (parody of an allusion) - citing chinese proverbs and high tailing it. Also known as nyah nyah*.
p/s:
*Emphasis on exp. materials: One of the function of dash , -, that I learned in college, taught by Mr. Sarno, of course.
*we are not amused: Queen Victoria of England liked to say this when she's pissed off. By the way, she, like any other royalties, refers to herself as 'we' (royal language)
*nyah nyah: Children like to say, "nyah nyah nyah nyah nyah, you cannot catch me"
