Rowling, please don't make Harry die!! 0 lalalas
No, J.K. Rowling is not assasinating Prince Harry. I just read in yesterday's paper that Stephen King and John Irving is asking Rowling not to let Harry Potter die in the grand finale of the series.
By the way, what do you think if Harry Potter's name is changed to Hairy Potter? Hmmm...
Viva Italia! 0 lalalas
Huhu, finally the World Cup is over, and I've lost an excuse for staying up late. I watched the finals with mixed feelings. Italy's goal was breached in the 7th minute in a penalty - a definite shocker, and a stupid tackle - and I nearly gave up on the whole match. Luckily I didn't. Both sides performed very well (finally!) with smooth, elegant passes and strong attacks. I was extremely impressed by Italy's water-tight defense, led by Cannavaro. The French Fries, no matter how skilful their attack, were intercepted masterfully by the Italians. Buffon was excellent, lightning-fast and accurate in his several saves especially that deadly header from Zidane. Materazzi scored the equalizer with a header and nearly took the lead with another header which hitted the post. Then Toni also nearly scored one.
From the start of second half, French started to dominate and the Italians seemed lame (except for the defense of course). Lucky for Italians that they have world's best defense and goalkeeper. Their attacking power can be decent at times and non-existant at others, which is not good. I was extremely irritated by the fools diving to earn undeserved freekicks, especially the ponytail fool, the strikers weren't much better. Of course, none can top the Portuguese "Diving King" Ronaldo (not the Fatnaldo). The French were tough with Zidane, Henry, Ribery but the defense was impenetratable. Zidane, obviously frustrated by their goaling impotency - the missed chances, headbutted Materazzi, who prior to that offense caressed Zizou's firm chest. I was like "World Taekwondo Federation" when I saw that. Really sad sad shameful retirement for such a talismanic player. I was really saddened but he deserved the red card for making a fool of himself.
Then the penalties. I thought the Italians were goners, but how wrong I was. Everyone scored except Trezeguet who replaced Henry-or-Ribery-I-forgot. What luck for the Italians! But I'd say they did well in the shootout, although I was disappointed by the absence of magnificent penalty saves of those made by Ricardo and the Ukraine handsome Greek-looking keeper.
In short, quite disappointing given a great game at the 1st half. But Italians won! So I'm happy. The referee was good too, nearly missed Zidane's un-Zidanelike beastly act though. The best match I've ever watched though, with both sides equally good - balanced play. Zidane = Ji-Dan (egg). The Italian Job is done, nuff said
p/s: tried to upload a .gif file of Zidane's headbutting but the blog doesn't support .gif files
England and Brazil lost.... 0 lalalas
Aih, the title explains it all... At last, those overrated super-countries have been kicked out. Stuttering from the start and slow to warm up, I was heart-broken by this but I have to say they deserved it. Luckily I still have Germany to support. I guess the way is to support strong teams, or not to support any at all; but for enthusiasts, this is impossible. Both teams have the most stars, yet they shone too bright that they blinded themselves to their weaknesses.
p/s: I liked the Australians too, despite my dislike for her idiotic prime minister John How-art-thou?
p/s2: Sven sucks
World Cup Fever 0 lalalas
Yes, today I found a 24-hour mamak near Ridzuan equipped with big screen and astro to watch World Cup!
So just now I watched the Germany vs. Ecuador match and England vs. Sweden match over there. The Germans were impressive, squashing their opponent 3-0. First 2 goals by Klose and last by Podolski. The Germans were extremely efficient, pressing on Ecuador throughout the game. Their defense looked pretty solid too. Ecuador, on the other hand, were in distraught, presenting a game full of miscues, giving up possession easily (and accidentally). Germany, exploiting those chances, blasted the Ecuadors. I'm getting increasingly impressed by Klinsmann coaching ability.
The England vs. Sweden match ended in a 2-2 draw. Pretty disappointing and shocking. Nearly fell down in the mamak shop after the match finished - don't know if it's caused by exhaustion or the blow caused by Larsson's equalizer at nearly 90-minute, a few minutes after Gerard's excellent header into Swede's goal. The Englishmen played well in the first half, pummelling Swedish defense with powerful out-of-penalty-box shots. The first goal by Joe Cole was perhaps the most beautiful goal in all the matches I watched. It's a pity that Owen injured himself (sort of twisted/broken his leg) after 1 minute or 2 after the opening. The Swedish retaliated in the 2nd half. Serious comeback. Although they couldn't bring the ball to the penalty box, their corner kicks seriously threatened the English defense. Weird...England seemed so defenseless against those. Besides Allback's first equalizer, there were other good attempts, I think 2 hit the bar.
I finally remembered why I distanced myself from football matches. It's not mainly the time consumption factor, but it's the emotional attachment to a team. When you watch a lot of matches, you sort of become a fan of a certain team - when it goals you roar with excitement, when it concedes goals/loses/doesn't perform you get heartbroken. That's what I felt when both of England's goals were equalized by the Swedes.
I think England failed to win because they missed too many valuable chances on the first half, and they displayed a lacklustre performance in the 2nd half. Plus the vulnerability of the goal to free kicks and especially corner kicks were disturbing. Overall their performance was better than that in their previous two matches, but the warming up is just not fast enough. Hopefully they can reach optimum state when they face Germany (Germany = deadly) later. It's going be tough going from now. God save the Queen!!
World Cup 2 lalalas
I've been watching World Cup although I'm not an avid football fan. So far, the matches haven't been that exciting especially for the supposed-to-be-strong country, like England and Brazil. Methinks Brazillian coach should get over with Ronaldo and change him with Robinho permanently. He's done with gambling and the Brazillian's victory was nearly compromised. Move your asses, England and Brazil! Downing you get out too! I'm so tired of all these countries performing badly. France too was uninspiring. Zidane, you should have stayed retired. Hoping for a really good match soon- so far I've only seen 1 side performing well, if any, in any matches.
An interesting sms... 0 lalalas
One day my friend Ashrul sent me a message:
"Describe me in one word"
Without any hesitation, I typed "Gay"
Then I thought, hey, this is a good idea of evaluating other people's view of me.
So I forwarded this message to a bunch of buddies, and got some pretty interesting remarks
Farisa: Korup

Shiong Yen: Diligent
Edward: Selekeh
Chean Seng: Lunatic
Mei Shan: Adorable
Izyan: Rotten
Chee Kang: Genius

Haha...a wide range of responses - I'm so multi-faceted, if that term apply. Perhaps all of us should try this.

Been very busy lately, VERY busy. My Waste Land assignment is finished, got a mark of 92 (cheers!). Now my focus is back on my Culminating Performance Task (C.P.T.), which consists of writing an analysis of a novel - mine is The Sound and The Fury, remember?
This assignment is due on next Thursday, one week from now. And I'm far from done. So keep me in your prayers, ya? Since I'm incapable of any long, "insightful" posts for now. Here's something to entertain you guys (and of course, myself):
1. Who will always answer "no" when you ask him/her whether she is free or not?
- A prostitute
2. How do you prove that you are not lying?
- By sitting down or standing up
3. A girl named Victoria is going to reveal her secret. What is she going to do?
- She's going to strip down to her lingeries.
4. Lecturer: You didn't pay attention in my class!
Student : Sorry sir, I couldn't afford it. I'm broke.
5. Two guys were fighting, and one of them said: "Give me a break!"
Guess what happened? The other guy gave him a break - he broke that guy's arm.
Dear Ol' Mr. Sarno 1 lalalas
Remember Mr. Sarno, my English lecturer?
Here's another interesting SMS discussion between us:
S(brief for Sarno): By the way, what is time?
M(brief for me): The constant speculation regarding the position of mechanical hands on an arbitrary dial which is a symptom of mind-function*. Happy?
[* A quote from the novel the Sound and the Fury that I'm analysing as assignment.]
S: What a load of hooey. Typical of the scientific mind to never admit defeat and ignorance*.
[*He obviously thinks that it was my own definition of time]
M: That's the mind of the cultured dipsomaniac, which is one of the reasons of Compson's* downfall.
[*A family in the Sound and the Fury]
S: Dipsomania glitters brightly beside megalomania and unadulterated narcissism.
M: And beside addiction of smoking and the misconception that it is cool*.
[*See my earlier post titled "Meaningless chatter" ]
S: Hawking notes that we have had to change our ideas abt space and time because they "don't work at all for things moving at or near the speed of light". I remember that every "time" i "light" a smoke and gaze off into space.
M: I seed de first en de last^! You are trying to escape time* by lighting your way to dusty death. Out! out!'
[^A quote from The Sound and the Fury]
[*A major theme in the Sound and the Fury]
['A quote from Shakespeare's "Tomorrow, tomorrow, and tomorrow", or more accurately, from "Macbeth"]
S: In real time, the universe has a beginning and an end at singularities that form a boundary to space-time and at which the laws of science break down... So maybe what we call imaginary timeis really more basic, and what we call real is just an idea that we invent to help us describe what we think the universe is like. Hawking. Bounce that off mr augustine.
S: Shine on.
M: Wow. You're really the legendary smokespeare - combining science and literature, yet consciously proceeds toward doom*
[*He is doomed because he smokes]
S: Science, lit., and cigarettes
S: And kickboxing*
[*He is learning kickboxing now...He used to be the leader of wrestling club in his high school days]
M: That's like taking a medicine and a poison at the same time.
[I mean kickboxing is good for his health, but smoking's gonna kill him]
S: You're right - the kickboxing is killing me
[Apparently he has mistaken what I mean, I'm not sure deliberately or not]
M: ...*
[*Actually I forgot what I messaged him because the "sent items" in my cell phone was overwritten]
S: A man is no more than the sum of his contradictions, to be mathematical. Now a woman, once a bitch always a bitch, that's what I say*
[*Now THIS is beyond my understanding...]
Enjoy!

Playboy Indon 0 lalalas
The first issue of the toned-down Playboy Indon is out! Guess what? The Guess Timeless Beauty and M'sian Best Female Model of the Year - the sometimes-lovely Amber Chia - posed in it, in scanty and appealing clothes. When I saw it, I was like "Walau A! This is solid stuff!". Looks like Playboy Indon is not as lame as suggested. About Amber Chia's looks, it really depends on her makeup and camera angles - sometimes she looks like an angel, sometimes like I-dunno-wut. Nevertheless, I like the pic because she doesn't look that bad with the oozing sensuality and sexiness.
The reaction from Indons:
The conservative Muslims are preparing to protest again, an action which couldn't be blamed as this kind of "suggestive" magazines really doesn't accord with Muslim's faith, even to the extent that it causes corruption to the belief which is "already inundated by [negative] Western influences" (New Straits Times, Apr 8).
On the hand, supporters were disappointed by the absence of nudity in the issue. "It's sinful to read Playboy if there's no nudity" or "It's a scandal! There's no nude women in the magazine" (NST, Apr 8) were some of the feedbacks. When I read this, I was like "Hello? This is Indon, not US, you voyeurs!". My viewpoint? Nudity is no good, only good looks matters. There is no point reading an explicit Playboy with nudes of cow-faced beauties (an example of oxymoron for ya!).
The moral:
We should read newspapers because we can get solid stuffs like this. Cheers!
V for Vendetta 0 lalalas
I didn't really know what to expect from this movie, just heard from others that it's about politics. Well, later I found out that it was much more than that - it's a good movie about revenge, the fight for freedom also.
One remarkable thing about this movie is that it has a lot of dialog compared to the other movies adapted from comics, and not just cliches - except for the authorities. And the movie had depth - it actually fleshes out v's character. We have never seen a comic hero who enjoys literature, classical music, arts, that can cook a nice egg toast, that can wear a ridiculous mask yet impress others, that can make others laugh yet create a sense of sympathy among others, have we?
His first appearance was already brilliant, with a quote from Shakespeare's Macbeth: "The multiplying villainies of nature do swarm upon him disdaining fortune/with his brandished steel, which smoked with bloody execution..." then a long-winded but amusing introduction with a lot of v-lettered words. FYI, I studied Macbeth last sem, so I was like, "Wow!"
There's a lot to be admired about V, his fireworks explosion, his extra-fast reflection, his wits, his guts, his flamboyance, his fascination with The Count of Monte Cristo, etc. FYI again, The Count of Monte Cristo was one of my favourite novels. So I was like "Wa Lau! Syok-nye"
Basically this story is about a person whose code-name was V when he was in a facility where the government tests bio-weapons on people. Somehow he broke free and for 20 years or so, he somehow accumulated a great fortune (and lots of works of art) and read tonnes of book and learned lots of skills, and emerged as the guy with the Guy Fawkes mask.
He talked about freeing the people from the government's autocracy, to restore justice and democracy to the country, etc etc when deep inside his heart he only wanted to have revenge for what they have done to him and a lesbo who stayed in the cell beside him that time. Nevertheless, by executing his revenge, he succeeded to stir up awareness for freedom and eventually a revolution among the people. With the power of unity and the power of some explosives and blades (heh heh), he finally created a better future for England (America was already doomed by then according to the movie, cheers!).
Even till the end, we still don't know the identity of V. Yet we know this: "He is Edmond Dantes, he is my father and mother, he is my brother and friend, he is you and me, he is everyone of us". And even though the flesh dies, the ideas remain, and the ideas are bulletproof.
What can I say? Watch it or regret not watching it!
Another pretty good one 0 lalalas
I also heard this from one of my GIG partners:
"What do you call a negro that flies a plane?"
"A black pilot?"
"He's a pilot, you racist!"
Brilliant lame joke 0 lalalas
I got this one from one of my church members during the GIG:
A man was trapped in a cell with only a table inside it. But he escaped. How?
The answer was:
He rubbed his arm so that it became sore (/saw) , then he used the sore to cut the table into halves. Two halves make a whole (/hole). He jumped out through the whole and cried until his voice became hoarse (/horse). Then he jumped onto the hoarse and escaped.
The moral of the story:
Becoming a doctor is very pressurizing.
American Idol 0 lalalas
Watched American Idol last night. Those participants were good - real good. And I get to see Barry Manilow (the guy who sang 'Mandy') - he looks a bit like Rod Steward. Some of them were even as young as 16 years old, and I can't tell you - their voice and behaviour are much more matured than what their age might suggest. And the comments from the judges were benevolent - except of course dear old Simon. There was one participant, Taylors who manage to rouse up the audience's mood and danced pretty well, but his vocal abilities was above-average, not great. Randy and Paula liked him, and praised him, but Simon said his performance was ridiculous - like singing in a karaoke box! Then Paula began to maul Simon with, "He only said that because he can't dance", "He is jealous of you","He can't even do a single dance move", etc...And you know how it'd be when common woman gets all excited and feverous - that's what happened to Paula. Simon looked so helpless, all the audience booed at him while he was trying to justify himself, "It's a singing competition, not a dancing competition", "Paula, you're whopping up trash", etc.
THIS FEW DAYS Part 3 0 lalalas
I played a round of Bluff (a type of card game - which dishonest guys like Shiong Yen will always win. Ironically, I won that round) before I went to find Mei Shan because she called me saying that she's in Taylor's now. What I found was more than just Mei Shan, a group of SABSians came to visit Taylor's (by the way, the military camp that Gatsby was in is called Taylor's camp). There was Si Rong, Jin Shun, Man Chan, Xiao Zhuang, Chien Chien, Mei Shan, Chiew Heong, Ai Li (she's in Taylor's now - just joining the SABSians), Kian Hian and GF, and many more, of whom I don't know. There were 3 conselling teachers - Mr Chan , and two female counsellors whom I forgot their surnames (I think one is Lim). So I followed them around, and talked with those guys - I enjoyed it, reminded me of my old secondary school days, which I missed a whole damn lot, it was the peak of youthfulness and craziness that almost everything after that feels like anticlimax.
After that, I went back to the party, and do some more meaningless but fun stuff - such as talking crap. And we took photos, and cleaned up the place. Then the usual stuff - work at library (with my expensive attires on..hehe!), buy newspapers, and went home. At 4 sth yesterday, I took a nap, then guess what? I woke up 2 and a half hours ago. There must be something wrong with me...
THIS FEW DAYS Part 2 0 lalalas
Yesterday there was a weird assignment: We are simulating a party based on the novel we've studied - The Great Gatsby. Besides bringing board games, music, food, and drinks, we are required to impersonate any character in the novel. The character that I chose was Meyer Wolfsheim. To "become" him, I wore my best black pants and dark blue shirts, and combed my hair with my housemate, Mu'min's Gatsby hairgel. One of the things that made yesterday so memorable was that it was the first time I've combed my hair since JPA interview April last year, like Ben always says,"It's been a while, huh".
Then comes the perverse part, Wolfsheim was a man with luxuriant nose hair, and since I was not blessed with it as in the case of Mr. Lai See Yan, I had to made some artificial one. First, I tried gluing my hair that I cut off onto a small paper ball so that I can stuck into my nostrils. Failed and the gum stank. Plan B was straightaway cramming my hair into my nostrils, without the ball. Failed also because the hair sticked everywhere when it got wet, and the hair was jutting out at all angles outside my nostrils. Then the ultimate plan: I went to buy two paint brushes, soften the tips with hot water (in AYA cafe opposite Taylor's college because I could get free hot water there), then pulled out the tips which I dipped inside a bottle of ink (which I got from the prep room beside Biology Lab 4) to blacken them, then wash the tip a bit before I stuck both into my poor nostrils. The smell of ink nearly suffocated me, and I had to breathe through my mouth when I was wearing them. But I was glad that I did it, because it certainly impressed my English lecturer, Mr. Sarno who had given us this assignment.
That guy impersonated a person who sell puppies in the novel: He borrowed some very cute toy puppies from the other lecturers. Amusing guy. Then my scholar friends Ashrul and Ariff bought military shirts as they were impersonating Gatsby (the novel's hero) at war. They must've spent a fortune there. And there was Harun who wore a mechanic overalls he bought from a hardware shop nearby. The girls were simply glamorous - they wore those dresses and hats as in 20's, which were nice. There was nothing much to do though - eating, drinking (not alcohol), playing cards, and most important of all, talking crap.
Meaningless Chatter 0 lalalas
One day, I was feeling bored, so i sms-ed my English lecturer, Mr. Sarno. After discussing about some course-related topics, I asked him about something more personal...
Wei Kee: Sir, as a smoker, do you enjoy 2nd hand smoke? How much do you spend a month in cigarettes? Do you suffer fits if you don't smoke for a week?
Sarno: As I inhale 1st hand smoke, that of a 2nd hand nature bothers me not a whit. With regard to how much it costs on a monthly basis, it is enough to say that after 30 some years of indulging, I've invested a house or 2. Finally, that nicotine is 1 of the most addictive substances on earth is a well known fact, so any major interruption in the feeding of the addiction has unpleasant consequences. And, equally important, smoking makes you cool ( heh heh)
Sarno: cough cough
WK: I accuse you (smokers) of causing lung cancers, I accuse you of causing air pollution, and I accuse you of causing M'sia hot like hell - anything that burns and emits smoke releases heat, so smoking is far from making us 'cool' (Emphasis on explanatory materials*)(Allusion)
Sarno: And we don't care
WK: And we (non-smokers) are not amused* (allusion)
Sarno: Non smokers should devote their (currently misguided) efforts to more important concerns - say world hunger, or passing eng 4u*.
WK: Smokers should convert to non-smokers so that non-smokers (now in greater number) can divert their (currently misunderstood by smokers) efforts to the 'more important concerns' stated - besides reducing deaths caused by smoking and air pollution.
Sarno: Look both ways before you cross the street - that's more of a threat than smoking. And if we're talking pollution, i guess we have to ban indonesia and a few other miscreants, like the whole oil-based world economy.
WK: Since this debate is getting nowhere, I have to resort to this: There's a Chinese axiom that truth always prevails over even the most cunning rhetorics. The scientifically proven and worldwidely recognized fact that smoking is harmful utterly defeats your brilliant, yet misguided and misguiding arguments
Sarno: Ah, the scoundrels last refuge (parody of an allusion) - citing chinese proverbs and high tailing it. Also known as nyah nyah*.
p/s:
*Emphasis on exp. materials: One of the function of dash , -, that I learned in college, taught by Mr. Sarno, of course.
*we are not amused: Queen Victoria of England liked to say this when she's pissed off. By the way, she, like any other royalties, refers to herself as 'we' (royal language)
*nyah nyah: Children like to say, "nyah nyah nyah nyah nyah, you cannot catch me"
